Asians, especially South Asians and Filipinos, are more likely to develop diabetes at a normal weight than other ethnic groups. Standard BMI cutoffs can miss people who are already at risk due to genetic, lifestyle, or dietary factors. At Stanford CARE, we’re researching why normal-weight Asians are more prone to developing diabetes and how certain precision therapies can more effectively treat Asian populations. New publication 🚨Congratulations to Stanford faculty and the Stanford CARE Scholars on "Personal and Family History of Cancer and Primary Lung Cancer Prevalence Among Never Smoking Disaggregated Asian American Women," published in Cancers. Drawing on electronic health records from more than 1.8 million women in a large Northern California health system (2010–2022), the team estimated adjusted prevalence ratios for primary lung cancer across six Asian American ethnic subgroups relative to age-matched non-Hispanic White women. Among never-smokers, prevalence was elevated across Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Korean women, with the highest ratio observed in Chinese women.

Asian flush isn't a fast metabolism. It's acetaldehyde piling up — a WHO Group 1 carcinogen.
East Asians have a significantly higher rate of alcohol intolerance than other groups. In Taiwan, 49% of people are alcohol intolerant: the highest rate on earth.
Dr. Che-Hong Chen, Stanford CARE faculty member, says it plainly: “‘Moderate drinking is good for you’ is a myth. There is no safe amount.”
