Most people think Falcon Heavy was just “two Falcon 9s strapped together”

But in reality....it was a over $500M engineering nightmare that SpaceX funded entirely on their own and they almost quit

Engineers quickly realized the aerodynamics completely changed when they attached the two Falcon 9 boosters. The vibration and acoustics tripled. The sheer physical stress from two super-powerful boosters shoving the center core was off the charts. The physics were so brutal that the target launch slipped from 2013 all the way to 2018

Elon Musk was incredibly blunt: “We tried to cancel the Falcon Heavy program three times at SpaceX because it was like, ‘Man, this is way harder than we thought’”

Before the maiden flight, Elon said he saw “a thousand things that could not work” and said simply clearing the pad without blowing it up would be a “win.”

Today the same Falcon Heavy has completed 12 successful flights
