In 1998, a Japanese anime called Cowboy Bebop premiered on TV Tokyo. It was so dark and adult that the network only aired 12 of the 26 episodes. The rest never made it to broadcast.

Three years later, an American channel called Cartoon Network picked it up. They put it on at midnight, as the first anime ever shown on their adult programming block.

It became one of the most influential anime series of a generation.

Cowboy Bebop was supposed to be a toy commercial. When the production studio Bandai gave director Shinichiro Watanabe the green light, they had one condition: include spaceships they could turn into toys. Watanabe took the money and made a hardboiled, jazz-scored, neo-noir series about depressed bounty hunters in space, drinking and dying. The toy department pulled out of the project. A different branch of Bandai picked up the bill.

The show fused American jazz, American westerns, American film noir, Hong Kong action movies, and Japanese cyberpunk. Then it was sent to Japan. Then it failed.

When it landed on American TV three years later, it landed in front of an audience already trained on every reference it was making. Adults who watched film noir as kids. Jazz fans who recognized every saxophone line. Western fans who could spot a Sergio Leone homage from a mile away.

For a generation of American kids who came of age in the early 2000s, Cowboy Bebop was the first anime that felt made for adults. Many of them never got over it.

Today, its DNA shows up in Firefly, in Guardians of the Galaxy, in most American space westerns of the last twenty years. Critics still argue about how direct the influence was. Fans stopped arguing years ago.

Yoko Kanno, the composer, is now treated like a god in Western jazz circles.

Spike Spiegel, the main character, has a name that sounds Jewish-American, a face modeled on a Japanese actor, and an English voice by an American voice actor. He's one of the most recognized anime characters in the world.

And came home only as legend.
