Dele Has Exposed the Truth: Nigeria Is a Slaughterhouse for the Igbo

Dele has finally said what many have whispered for decades and what the Nigerian state has spent generations trying to bury. Nigeria has an Igbo problem. And that problem is not ambition, not “restiveness,” not “secessionist noise.” It is the systematic denial of citizenship. It is the absence of the rule of law. It is impunity elevated into state policy. Strip away the polite language and what remains is a slaughterhouse.

How did a people who once pushed hardest for a unitary Nigeria, at the height of their influence, end up demanding a separate homeland? Dele’s answer is brutal and correct: the loss of citizenship. When a country refuses to treat you as a full citizen, when the law does not protect you, when violence against you is met with shrugs or active complicity, the natural response is to seek an exit. That is not treachery. That is survival.

If the Igbo were genuine citizens of Nigeria, the agitation for a separate homeland would wither. Dele is right. If citizenship were real, the Middle Belt would not be bleeding under the weight of unchecked Fulani herdsmen. If citizenship were real, a Hausa man would not be locked up simply for asserting his nationality. The same machinery that grinds the Igbo also grinds others. The difference is that the Igbo have been ground longest, loudest, and with the least pretence of regret.

Restore citizenship and the slaughterhouse begins to close. Restore the rule of law and the demand for Biafra loses its oxygen. Fail to do so and the blood keeps flowing. Nigeria has chosen the second option for more than fifty years. The result is visible in mass graves, in abandoned properties, in the quiet calculation every Igbo family makes about whether their children are safer inside or outside the Nigerian project.

Dele did not invent this diagnosis. He simply refused to soften it. He refused the usual Nigerian habit of blaming the victim while the knife remains in the wound. He pointed at the absence of citizenship and called it what it is: the root of the crisis. Everything else is theatre.

There are no saints in this story and no pure sinners. The collective failure is Nigerian. But the particular burden has fallen heaviest on the Igbo, and Dele has dragged that fact into the light. Nigeria can keep pretending the slaughterhouse does not exist. Or it can finally open the doors, restore the law, and treat every citizen as a citizen. Until then, the demand for a separate homeland is not the disease. It is the rational response of people who have been told, again and again, that they do not fully belong.

Dele has exposed it. The rest is up to those who still claim this country is one.
