This happened last Monday at Seattle Airport security checkpoint. The child is Mason, 5 years old. Autistic and minimally verbal. His father is Greg. Mason was having a complete sensory overload meltdown. The airport security checkpoint was too loud, too bright, too chaotic. Mason sat on the floor screaming. Covering his ears. Rocking violently back and forth. Greg knelt beside him trying everything.
Nothing worked. Security line backing up. People complaining. Some recording on phones. Then a woman in a wheelchair approached. Her name is Jennifer, 46. The dog is Max, a six-year-old yellow Labrador. Jennifer's anxiety service dog. Security tootage shows Jenniter wheeling toward Mason.
Stops about twelve feet away. Looks at Max. Max is pulling hard toward Mason. Jenniter releases the leash. "Go help, Max." Max walks straight to Mason.
Lies down. Presses his full body weight against Mason's side. Deep pressure therapy. Mason's screaming stops within forty-five seconds. His hands move from his ears to gripping Max's fur. The rocking slows dramatically. Mason leans into Max. Stays there for eighteen minutes. Greg watches. Tears streaming down his face. Mouths "thank you" over and over to Jennifer. Jennifer stays back. Doesn't approach. Lets Max work. When Mason finally calms enough to stand and go through security, Greg approaches Jennifer.
"How did your dog know? We've been on a waitlist for a service dog for four years. Insurance denied it." Jennifer said: "Max isn't trained for autism. He's my anxiety service dog. But he knew Mason needed help.
He pulled toward him. I trusted Max's instincts. He's done this twice before with children in distress.'
TSA supervisor told: "That intervention prevented a situation that could've become very difficult. The child was in complete crisis. That service dog calmed him in under a minute." Sometimes angels have four legs and know exactly who needs them.
