it’s just fascinating reading this book, even reading the men’s own words, knowing that almost everyone on this expedition is doomed. no matter how hard they’re trying in this chapter, the end of the book is inevitable.

just started Labyrinth of Ice, and it’s fascinating how much detail is known about the day-to-day of the expedition, how much insight you get into group dynamics and the men’s individual characters…

you can say the same thing about, like, the Franklin Expedition, but with that one we don’t HAVE these written records and day-to-day insights! same story, different font, but one expedition got lucky enough to have written records (and a few lucky (?) members) survive.
