For people who think I’m “woke” or rightwing or whatever, my politics boil down “favoring rational things that have been proven to work.” And I define “work” as basic utilitarianism, the most good for most of us.

I’m pro police and pro immigration because both are good for America. I want reasonable border controls because a country needs those, but trying to suddenly deport 12 million people would be bad.

I’m pro capitalism, because greed works as a motivating force to produce more stuff (where for most of human history almost everyone was incredibly poor). I want reasonable taxes, regulation, and social programs, because capitalism left alone will abandon too many who deserve help.

My pro-capitalism position makes me anti-tariffs, which economists mostly agree are awful for trade (which produces more wealth).

I wish Israel and Iran weren’t bombing each other because innocents dying is bad, but I know the Middle East is a mess and trying to explain it in a tweet is a fool’s errand.

I’m pro treating everyone with respect (assuming they aren’t doing crime or spewing hate). Thus, I’m pro gay marriage because supporting loving partnerships benefits us all, no matter who is in the partnership (and I don’t care what you do in the bedroom).

I’m pro free speech because, a) I think allowing ideas to flow freely benefits us all, even if we don’t like all those ideas, and b) I want to be able to jabber and anything that restricts that makes me peevish!

Being rational doesn’t solve everything (See: Middle East, above). What do you do about abortion? The answer has to do with things like when you think human life begins and what the trade-offs are on infringing on a woman’s autonomy. I have my take (hardcore pro choice), but I can understand those who passionately disagree.

Trans issues are another mess. I start from the place of wanting to respect the needs and fears of trans folk, but also feeling the same for biological women, whose rights may be impinged upon.

And there is loads more stuff that is not easily solved by reason, sometimes because the problems are so complex. Obviously, building more housing would be good, but HOW to do it, that seems to stump us. And why are trains so damn expensive in America compared to Europe? And then, let’s dig into health care!

Recognizing where the problems are (medium hard) and solving them (incredibly hard) is not easy. Reasonable people will disagree on what needs to be done.

And then add in my general belief that we hate each other far more than we should! Most humans aren’t complete dicks and granting some grace to those who disagree with us would be a good thing!

Yes, nothing original here, but I don’t claim originality. I’m using this account to share my takes on what makes sense to me, and then add in some humor because good lord we need some laughs.

@LadPsycho Huge fan of Talk Talk (& Mark Hollis, their frontman). Their output is full of rich Christian imagery. I discovered Steve Taylor not that long ago; his album I Predict 1990 is quite good; definitely 80's but not preachy at all.
