i had been thinking about this scene a bit and i think this explains it so well. it's like they're constantly engaged in some odd kind of mental chess - this is where william not only decides to join that game but decides to kind of prove that he's a worthy opponent to sherlock.

i know it's very sherliam here and i agree oftentimes (they're the dynamic the series explores the fullest after all) but honestly i think sometimes people forget how much sherlock's friendship with john helped shape him and motivate him to do what he does for william as well
