While the civil war may have increased the import and availability of Norwegian Okporoko (stockfish), it did not introduce okporoko into Igbo cuisine. M. M. Green based on fieldwork carried out between 1934 and 1935 decades before the war documents okporoko as an established part of the Igbo culinary tradition. Her account records okporoko as a regular soup ingredient, a food bought for family use and festive occasions, an item of local trade, and a dish served at women’s meetings and other communal gatherings. Green also describes okporoko and dried fish as distinct foods, showing that both already had recognised places in the Igbo diet.
From the historical record, the civil war is a period that expanded the import of Norwegian okporoko, not the origin of its place in Igbo cuisine
How stockfish (Okporoko) became a part of Igbo history.
During the Nigerian Civil War in 1967, Nigeria imposed a food blockade on the old Eastern Region.
There was widespread of starvation, and people were dying from kwashiorkor.
Norway 🇳🇴 stockfish was among the foods supplied as humanitarian aid to the old Eastern Region.
Because stockfish is rich in protein and has a long shelf life, it became a lifesaver for many people during the war.
After the war, stockfish became a household food in many Igbo homes.
This is why many Igbo people were rooting for Norway during the 2026 World Cup because Norwegian stockfish played an important role in humanitarian relief efforts during the war.
