I reported a senior coworker after he repeatedly made inappropriate comments about me.

HR asked whether I was sure he “actually meant it that way”

They asked if I'd smiled at him before.

They asked whether we'd ever joked together.

They even asked if I wanted to “think carefully” before making a formal complaint because his career could be affected.

I asked, “If a man reported the same behavior from a female manager, would you be asking him whether he was sure he understood her?”

On this day 25 years ago, three 11-year-old Washington, D.C., sixth-graders were selected to participate in a National Geographic-sponsored field trip to California.

The students were Bernard C. Brown II, Asia S. Cottom, and Rodney Dickens.
Their teachers were James D. Debeuneure, Sara M. Clark, and Hilda E. Taylor.
They boarded American Airlines Flight 77 for the trip. That morning, the plane was hijacked and deliberately flown into the Pentagon.

Twenty-five years later, we remember their names, honor their lives, and stand with every family and loved one forever affected by their tragic loss.

That scene where Tisha's character, Josie revealed to the class through her assignment speech that she was HIV positive was one of the most powerful and informative moments i'm glad was portrayed on a sitcom

A biology teacher in Pine Bluff, Arkansas noticed one of her students kept falling asleep in class. Instead of sending her to the principal, she asked why. The girl was living with a grandmother who had no bed for her, in a house with termites eating the walls and the electricity shut off. The teacher, Crystal Barnes, bought a bed frame and mattress with her own money, on a fifty thousand dollar salary. When she delivered it, the girl asked if she could also have some food. She was hungry. Barnes now keeps a cart of snacks in her classroom, paid for out of pocket, because she can't undo what federal cuts have done but she can do that much.

Barnes found her own way out of a similar hole as a pregnant fifteen year old, through a nonprofit that fed her son and helped her finish school. She's spending her career paying that forward one bed, one snack cart at a time. It's not policy. It's not enough. It's just what's left when policy fails and someone still shows up anyway.

On this day in 1919, a Black teenager drifted across an invisible line in Lake Michigan. White beachgoers stoned him until he drowned. He was 17.

His name was Eugene Williams. The "line" was the unofficial boundary between the white and Black sections of a Chicago beach. A line drawn on WATER.

Police arrived. Black witnesses pointed out the man who had thrown the stones. The officer refused to arrest him and arrested a Black man from the crowd instead.

That refusal lit Chicago on fire. Thirteen days of white mobs raiding Black neighborhoods, and Black veterans fighting back: 38 dead, 537 injured, roughly 1,000 Black families burned out of their homes.

It began because a child couldn't see a border that existed only in white minds.
