do you guys talk to your partners about fanfiction? my bf will ask me what i’m up to but idk how to explain that i’m reading stories random people made up about these characters
i don't like the influx of normies coming into the space made by weirdos and asking what's up with all this weird shit. and I definitely don't like the entitlement of minors coming into adult fandoms and demanding we cater to them by making everything kid friendly
i think that with the new wave of popular fanfics being optioned for traditional publishing deals, a lot of people have forgotten that fanfic is a labor of love. it's not perfect bc it isn't supposed to be. it's a passion project, not a product

ao3 has been under a lot of pressure lately. more users, more traffic, more reports, more confusion. which is great in one way because fandom is alive and people want stories, but it also means we all need to breathe and remember how the site actually works.
this is for everyone. old readers, new readers, writers, lurkers, people who just discovered fanfiction last week, and people who have been here since dial up.
let us talk about how to exist peacefully on ao3.
