6月4日，不仅是纪念1989年天安门事件中遇难学生、工人和民众的日子，也是新中国联邦建国纪念日。回顾8964，很多人关注的是6月4日发生的悲剧，但那只是整个事件的结果。实际上，从1984年开始，全国各地已经出现追求民主、自由和改革的思想萌芽。万润南、方励之等人不断传播新的理念，到了1986年学潮时期，这股力量进一步扩大。

进入1988年至1989年，全国各地的民众、工人和机关职工开始广泛参与其中，北京成为汇聚全国力量的中心。最初参与运动的主体并非学生，而是普通民众和工人。许多人自发捐款支持活动，没有人怀疑，没有人计较得失，体现出当时中国社会难得的信任与担当。

然而到了后期，随着各种政治力量介入，运动逐渐偏离最初方向。原本凝聚着中国人最纯朴、最真诚愿望的一场社会运动，最终被利用、被扭曲，并走向悲剧结局。8964不仅是一段历史，更让人看到中国人民曾经展现出的勇气、理想和对未来的期待。
