Mahmood Mamdani, his father, is a respected academic — a Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and Anthropology at Columbia University and a scholar in postcolonial studies.

During his upbringing, Zohran lived as a “one-percenter” in comfortable, elite New York neighborhoods. He grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in housing provided by Columbia University and his mother owned a Chelsea condo valued near $2 million, reports show.
