Being a clinician, I will understand your statement because of my background knowledge. But for laymen, this is a blanket statement that will lead to oversimplification and in turn misinformation.

In pharmacogenomics, it is the individual first (population terms like race can come in later). Also, it is very important to specify the drug, the enzyme, the allele, and the effect.

If I use that to your tweet, it means that it should not be “…makes them break down drugs….” It should be “make them break down CERTAIN drugs.”

A layman will read the former and think that since you said he breaks down drugs faster, it pertains to all medications.

Even aside from the first point above, the tweet is still incomplete. Because it didn’t specify the enzyme, the allele, and the drug class.

For example, when there was a research on risperidone with regards to Africans, in the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, the researcher (Pharmacist Oyinlade Kehinde) studied a drug (risperidone), the enzyme CYP2D6, and the alleles *17 and *29 (predominantly found in individuals with sub-Saharan African ancestry). The functional effect that she noted was that *17 is faster and *29 might not work at all.

When The Punch carried it, it was with those pharmacogenomical context included. Which means anyone that reads the news will not have a generalized notion about it.
In their mind, they will know that: yes, it is for risperidone, some of us will have it, and this is what will happen.

So, gor your 9 in 100 Nigerians have it, it is largely incomplete. Because it does not answer, for what drug, for what enzyme, for what allele, to what effect.

Meaning it is better to say, “some individuals can metabolize CERTAIN drugs faster due to this enzyme and this other thing” and when going population wise, add the necessary pharmacogenomical context.
