German Shepherds have been widely used as police, military, search-and-rescue, and service dogs because of their intelligence, trainability, and ability to follow commands under pressure. A well-trained working dog must learn to ignore distractions that might trigger natural instincts, whether that's a loud noise, a crowd, another animal, or food.

Cats are sometimes used in training environments because they can provoke curiosity, excitement, or prey drive in some dogs. The goal is not to teach the dogs anything about cats specifically, but to reinforce obedience and self-control. A dog that can remain focused despite distractions is far more reliable in real-world situations.

That said, this image should not be taken as evidence that all service dogs are trained this way, or that cats are routinely used in every training program. Training methods vary widely among organizations and trainers.

During World War I, the German military helped popularize the German Shepherd as a working dog. Returning soldiers from several countries were impressed by the breed's abilities, leading to its widespread adoption for police work, guide-dog programs, and military service throughout the 20th century. Today, German Shepherds remain one of the most commonly employed working dog breeds in the world.
