My neighbor asked if I could help move his daughter into college. I said yes, because I have a strong back and no idea what I was agreeing to.

Fourteen boxes. A rug. String lights. A refrigerator the size of a small shrine. We carried it all up three flights in August heat while his daughter directed us with her phone.

Her mom made the bed. Her dad checked the window locks. Then checked them again. The windows were fine. He knew the windows were fine.

He slid a folded hundred into her hand. "Don't tell your mother." Her mother had done the same thing in the parking lot. Neither of them knows. Everybody knows.

Then it was time. The girl hugged them fast, and was already laughing at something down the hall.

"Didn't even look back," he said in the truck. He said it like a complaint. It was the proudest sentence I have heard in this country.

We stopped for gas halfway home. He came out with two bottles of the orange drink she likes. Looked at the second one for a moment. Handed it to me.

Three hours. He said one other thing the whole drive.

"House is gonna be quiet."

In eight hundred years, my country wrote ten thousand poems about the young warrior leaving home. Not one about the man who drives back with the empty truck.

I drank the orange drink slowly. It felt important to.
