There is no requirement to not have any particular status - enslaved, imprisoned, bankrupt, deceased, committed, stateless, wanted, sanctioned, terrorist watch list, whatever.

This is from the middle of a fantastic thread debunking the "slaves learned trades" thing (the particular individuals weren't actually slaves), but an interesting point is that the US patent system has never, as far as I know, limited who can be an inventor. (1/n)

So who can be a listed inventor on a US patent application? Absolutely anyone. There is no requirement to be a citizen of anywhere or be located anywhere. There is no minimum or maximum age (though, modernly, older inventors get prioritized examination) (5/n)
