LOOK: Hundreds of volunteers and conservationists gather at the newly launched 'Masungi Defense Camp' to attach bells to the fence of Masungi Georeserve and walk in solidarity against eviction threats faced by the site's current caretaker from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), following the final day of the eviction notice issued by the DENR on Masungi Georeserve’s developer Blue Star Construction & Development Corp., on Tuesday, April 1.

The eviction and cancellation notice was issued due to Blue Star's alleged failure to deliver 5,000 housing units under the Supplemental Joint Venture Agreement, which Blue Star defended by citing the DENR’s failure to clear the sites of the housing units of illegal occupants and claimants prohibiting them to comply to the contractual project timeline.

Masungi, part of the Upper Marikina Watershed and the Soutern Sierra Madre, serves as a natural defense against extreme weather, landslides, flooding, water shortages, and land degradation. Environmentalists stress that preserving these protected areas is crucial to safeguarding the country’s resilience against climate disasters.
