One thing I’ve tried to avoid with magic in my story is making it feel like a simple superpower.
I like the idea that using magic requires understanding, discipline, and practice.
Having the potential to do something and actually mastering it are two very different things.

@RebeccaTElley I’m right there with you. I’ve been developing my story for years, and it has changed so much from where it started. Still a long way to go, but I’m getting there.
@A_G_Kirkland I’m still figuring it out. The scope definitely makes it challenging, especially when I’m already mentally drained from work. Right now I’m just trying to make steady progress without burning myself out.
Writers, how do you do it?
Work all day, come home mentally exhausted, and somehow still find the energy to write.
I’m trying to balance a day job with writing right now, and some days it’s definitely a struggle.
What works for you?

@GilGandel Very true. I’ve had ideas show up at the most inconvenient times. Now I’ve gotten into the habit of keeping my phone nearby so I can at least jot them down before they disappear.
@MichelSeguin2 That makes sense. I think I’m still figuring out where the line is between pushing myself and just making myself more exhausted. Definitely something I need to get better at.
@TJHall81 That’s actually pretty inspiring. 350 words after a full day of work doesn’t sound like much, but over time it really adds up. I think I need to get better at giving myself permission to have days where I’m not writing too.
@GilGandel I’ve actually had ideas pop into my head while I’m working too. Sometimes it’s the last place you expect to get inspired. The trick for me is remembering the idea long enough to actually use it later.
@WritesMedieval I can definitely see how it becomes a lifestyle once you’ve done it for that long. Treating it like a second job probably takes a lot of discipline. And yeah, balancing writing and marriage sounds like a completely different challenge.
@TJHall81 350 words actually sounds pretty manageable. I like the idea of reading what you wrote the day before too. That probably makes it easier to get back into the story instead of starting cold every time.
@WritesMedieval It started as a simple idea years ago and just kept growing. I’ve always loved fantasy and sci-fi, so eventually I started combining the two with a lot of world building. Now it’s turned into something much bigger than I originally planned.
