@CitizenRitz I guess it’s partially from growing up in Rochester, but Section V has always been an “open tournament” as far as I know. Sectionals were a part of the season. Licking your wounds against an undefeated McQuaid team was not a “participation trophy” kind of experience.

@CitizenRitz If this is a legit question, I think the answer is having as many teams as possible. You still get the same potential “competitive” matchups a round in without a horde of teams getting a bye. On teams I’ve coached with a higher seed, I’d much rather play than sit for days.

@CoachKeesler @NateLull The “earned not given” thing was new to me down here. Again, everyone thought of Sectionals as part of the total experience. We didn’t have league tournaments/championships so that may be another variable. It was straight from the regular season to the sectionals.

@NateLull Brackets that go unfilled lead to byes. As a top seed I’d much rather play a sub .500 team than sit. If you miss your conference championship in the IAC that can mean sitting for up to two weeks.

@NateLull 4.) Respectably disagree with @CoachKeesler that it’s like a participation trophy. In Section V it wasn’t a reward, it was a part of the season. And being a 16 seed sent to face a powerhouse certainly didn’t feel like an award!

@NateLull 3.) .500 isn’t always the holy grail. Some teams play far tougher competition in their league schedule due to geography, others far weaker. One key injury during a season, especially in smaller schools, can put a playoff contender into a spiral until he/she returns.

@NateLull The SecIV response was typically that they wanted to “maintain the integrity” of the tournament. Never understood what that means. The NCAA men’s bball tournament doesn’t seem less legit because Kentucky beats Austin Peay A&M State in the first round by sixty every year.

@NateLull When I first came down here twenty years ago from Section V, I thought it was extremely bizarre that not all teams go to sectionals. Not sure if it’s the right time now, but there’s a myriad of reasons to move to that system.
