The narrative is we're just a big VC fund that invests in everything
Here's what actually happened:
From 2017-2021, we invested heavily in gaming and culture because that was our thesis. When the NFT boom hit, it looked like we were right. Our valuation exploded.
Then Apple, Google and Steam killed Web3 gaming distribution after FTX.
Most of our portfolio companies couldn't reach users. Crypto was in a deep bear market.
So we evolved
Now we're building the infrastructure the next billion users actually need:
* Identity systems that work (Mocaverse)
* Financial education (Open Campus)
* Access through stablecoins (Anchor Point)
We're trying to fulfill our mission and build products with deep Web3 capabilities that regular people will use without knowing they're using blockchain.
Consumer adoption follows a simple pattern - 99% of products fail to change behavior. The 1% that succeed either make people significant money or eliminate friction from something they already do.
See, distribution is everything. Web2 platforms control consumer access. Anything requiring app store approval or browser wallet installs has a distribution ceiling.
Web2 companies already have distribution, but they lack the ability to mange their own financial rails, and that's what Animoca is solving for

Media reporting about recent updates at The Sandbox has included various inaccurate or out-of-context claims, despite the fact that we provided some of those media outlets with information and clarification prior to publishing. Below are the major points.
Co-Founders and new CEO:
The Sandbox’s co-founders Arthur Madrid and Sebastien Borget have transitioned to new strategic roles. Both of them remain deeply involved in The Sandbox and its ecosystem. Arthur is now the chairman of The Sandbox, and Sebastien is the global ambassador, a role that fully enables him to represent The Sandbox online as well as in conferences and events around the world.
Robby Yung, CEO of Investments at Animoca Brands and one of the directors of The Sandbox, has been appointed as CEO of The Sandbox. Robby is a founding member of Animoca Brands and also a member of its executive committee. He has been instrumental in guiding Animoca Brands through its various stages of development, providing exceptional leadership in its many investments and acquisitions, and has worked closely with the executive management of The Sandbox since its acquisition by Animoca Brands in 2018.
Restructuring:
As The Sandbox matures, we are continuously optimising our operations. This involves leveraging advancements in AI, particularly in game development and operational support. The impact of AI advancements in the gaming industry has been well documented: AI allows us to accelerate deployment of content, features, and LiveOps while maintaining a leaner, more agile team. Additionally, The Sandbox will benefit from the closer integration of resources and shared services from Animoca Brands.
While decisions that impact personnel are always difficult and are never made lightly, they are necessary for us to adapt to technological advances and ensure The Sandbox’s long-term success.
Proper context is also important. For example, while the oft-repeated claim that The Sandbox is closing down “5-6 offices” sounds extremely serious out of context, the reality is that:
We deprecated our presence in five locations in order to optimize The Sandbox’s global operations. The term “office” is misleading, as multiple of these locations were staffed by between one to three freelance contractors working remotely or in coworking spaces, which was not considered efficient.
The functions of all deprecated locations are being consolidated in more centralized offices to improve The Sandbox’s efficiency.
After the restructuring, The Sandbox maintains a formal presence in nine locations around the world.
The Future:
Animoca Brands’ increased involvement in The Sandbox represents a powerful commitment to the platform, to holders of $SAND, and to the broader community. The Sandbox and Animoca Brands remain committed to the core mission of empowering creators. We all continue our work to advance the growth of The Sandbox’s token economy alongside hundreds of major brands and partners - as we have done since 2018. The Sandbox's virtual assets, including $SAND, LANDs, all NFT collections, and various ecosystem assets remain unchanged.
We remain fully committed to The Sandbox's core mission and we will share updates through our official channels as they become available, as there is currently a lot of speculation and inaccurate information circulating about The Sandbox.
