Sometimes I file Freedom of Information requests. Here’s a thread with some of those past FOIs (mostly VicPD) and some resources. If you have an idea and need help doing your own, even if you just need a printer and a stamp to mail it off, I’m happy to try to assist! #yyj#cdnfoi
There’s a #yyj police board meeting at 5:00 pm. Apparently the province has finally decided whether they will veto Victoria and Esquimalt councils’ rejection of some of VicPD’s proposed 2023 spending. Posting over here. https://t.co/AZaX7utOph
There’s a #yyj police board meeting at 5:00 pm. Includes police chiefs encouraging overturning SD61 election, and a letter from the mayor that makes it clear #vicpdboard refuse to work with the city to lower their budget request. Will post on Bluesky. https://t.co/vzlfF8cfCw
Background if the government fires the school board today for not loving police enough. If they do, it's fully possible VicPD still won't bring back SLOs, claiming they don't have enough money.
Here’s a short thread on SD61’s direction on police in schools. The proposal reads like a new type of SLO (“police member assigned to schools”), but with some oversight over programs delivered, and formal requirements for regular meetings, data collection, etc. 🧵
🚨 NO evidence to support the notion that police-in-schools make educational spaces safer.
⚠️ The detrimental impacts are still present regardless of police-in-school programs being rebranded/reformed/revised/‘reimagined’/‘created anew’

I would keep police away from schools far more than is contemplated by SD61’s plan, but given what was forced on them, it’s likely as good as it gets for now. If someone says police aren’t in schools, or the new plan doesn’t allow police in schools, they are misinformed or lying.
Re-upping this old thread on what SD61 SLOs used to get up to. E.g., telling international students to "be positive representatives of your home nations"; engaging in recruitment at schools; "wellness checks"; etc.
Earlier this month I sent summary info on SD61’s school liaison officer (SLO) program, and schools’ use of police, to SD61’s SLO committee. Tweeting out on this thread. CW: includes summaries of SD61 schools calling police, including on kids under 10. #yyj#cdnfoi
Govender adds that calls to elementary schools are stable, and calls to high schools are down. The government is signalling it's SLOs or bust, but there's still time to write in before the government-appointed special advisor's report comes in next week. https://t.co/VbkTzxGiuK
B.C.'s Human Rights Commissioner: "data from 2015 to 2024 made available by police whose jurisdictions include [SD61] schools … shows no clear correlation between an increase in gang activity in schools and the end of the [SLO] program." https://t.co/jXDpvXgiaM
In 3 years the provincial government has yet to conduct high-quality research on current and recently ended SPLO programs that centres Indigenous, Black and other acutely affected student populations. 1/2 https://t.co/IVprLLcJjk

The province appointed a pro-school liaison officer "advisor" to rewrite SD61's safety plan, interfering with the elected board and making it clear they want police in schools. I would encourage folks to email to object. Template here if it's helpful! https://t.co/VbkTzxGiuK #yyj
