Diversity is a competitive advantage. To attract the best candidates, they have to be able to look at the company’s leadership and say:
“Oh she looks like me and she’s at the top of the place.”
or
“He looks like me and has a great track-record with this company.”

Many aspiring leaders from under-represented groups have had to overcome several barriers and navigate systems that were not build with them in mind. This hustle comes with a different richness in their ability to lead that should not be overlooked.
DE&I work isn’t just about a series of actions that you take and things are instantly better. The work will look different for every company, so looking inward, rather than just seeking out ‘best practices’ is the only way companies will begin to see true transformation.
You have a right to be in the workplace without being looked over, interrupted or excluded. In fact, the next time you hesitate to put your interest first, remember that you have as much a right to be in the workplace as the white man sitting next to you.
If organizations are not willing to reshape their power structure, doesn’t matter how many candidates from underrepresented backgrounds there are in their pipeline; these companies are no closer to reaping the benefits of diversity.
