My dream for 2025?
Stopping Direct to Consumer (DTC) TV ads for drugs.
Drugs shouldn’t be sold by a jingle, cartoon, or broadway style song / dance. Are we educating patients, or simply enticing them to consider exceedingly pricy drugs?
Who knows what Fournier’s gangrene is?
Have you read the #Cass report yet? You should.
Well-meaning intentions don’t always result in positive outcomes. When #evidence shows potential harm outweighs benefits, you stop the intervention. Otherwise, you become an #activist.
Great summary & pertinent links below 👇
We've completed our preliminary analysis of the Cass Report. The "gender-affirming" model of care is over in England, as is the era of the gender-clinic model of care, which exists to deliver youth transitions. This will have world-wide implications./1

Kicking off #HIMSS23#AMDIS physician executive forum, looking at opportunities to reduce #burden !
Never any simple answers - but #collaboration is key!
The recommendations by the Norwegian Healthcare Investigation Board (NHIB/UKOM) align Norway with the changes among the growing number of European countries (Sweden, Finland, England) which aim to safeguard youth from harm by sharply restricting youth gender transitions. /7
Thanks @bmj_latest for exposing the facts around #interventions for #genderdysphoria. Most parents don't know what #GRADE is, but doctors do. When low or very low GRADE means risks may outweigh benefits - WHY are clinics still using controversial drugs?

Before I ReTweeted the former dean of Harvard medical school, I read every sentence of this paper.
It is persuasive.
Silence of the medical profession regarding the coercion of young people to take a potentially net harmful medical intervention is shocking
These trends should alarm any #physician or #parent. Acceptance of your innate biology is a struggle for any teen, but talk therapy needs to be our focus, NOT inappropriate wrong sex drugs or surgery.

The wave of teens seeking gender transition in the UK continues to grow. According to the most recent data released by #GIDS and its new referral service, after a COVID dip, referrals doubled 2021-22, for a total of 5,000+ referrals. Teen girls continue to dominate this trend. /1
Thanks @drjohnm - we see this every day in #gender medicine. False headlines & small misleading studies promoting #medicalization or surguries on youth with #GenderIdentity issues. Yes #harm outweighs benefits. #Detransitioners tell us every day. Time for docs to listen to them!
In the medical realm, we tend to see mostly the upside of intervening. Intervention bias.
Why this is, I do not know.
But you learn in this job, over time, that benefits do happen but so do harms
Thanks @lacroicsz - there are many reasons study headlines don’t represent facts. #Research requires thoughtful study design with controls.
Even the #NIH scandalous 5y “outcomes study” #medicalizing kids with #GenderDysphoria is yet to be published. What facts are they hiding?
Thanks @lacroicsz for the facts:
"From a young age [to] be lied to by adults at school and by medical professionals and told that your body is wrong - you need to change it, you need to get hormones, need to get surgeries - that's devastating for a young person"

Helena Kerschner tells Tucker Carlson about why she detransitioned and is now speaking out against pushing children to transition:
"I'm just really concerned for younger girls and boys being led down this path, and being hurt by it."
No, @HHSGov this is NOT okay.
Show me the GRADE evidence, or long-term controlled studies showing these interventions are safe or effective.
Hint: v. low, low, or NO GRADE, and NO controlled studies.
Minors deserve better!

A good post, a bad headline. Better headline:

Agree @amyfaithho - #HealthAnalytics should be led by physicians! “This is not an IT question, it is a political one.” We have a long way to go in many organizations! #HIMSS22#AMDIS
