Next stop, training camp. I quite enjoy the camps. They’re a good time to connect with riders and staff 1:1 outside of the race environment, do some testing, and have bigger conversations.
One lesson: textbook guidelines often go straight out the window. You need to deliver what you can, when you can. g/kg targets and perfect meal timing work great in books. But a lot harder when you’ve got a team on different TT start times, rolling out across several hours.
As exercise intensity increases, your body shifts its fuel source:
Low intensity = fat dominates.
High intensity = carbs dominate.
This was clearly shown in a classic study by Romijn et al. (1993).
