University School of Milwaukee senior Ethan Van Genderen was named a finalist for the WIAA’s Spirit of Sport Award, a recognition that reflects his resilience and strength both on and off the field.
A three-sport student-athlete, Ethan’s journey took an unexpected turn just two days after earning All-Metro Classic Conference honorable mention in football in 2024, when he was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Over the past year, he has undergone extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments, including additional care at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.
Through it all, Ethan has remained a constant presence for his teams. He attended lacrosse practices last spring and saw limited game action, even finding the back of the net once. During football season, he showed up to every practice and game, supporting and mentoring his teammates on the offensive and defensive lines.
Although Ethan's final prognosis won't be known for several years, his resilience, commitment, and love for his teams continue to define his journey, and now, he looks ahead with the goal of returning to the lacrosse field for his senior season this spring.✨💛 #SpiritofSport
