For almost 30 frustrating years, @AlabamaMBB believed the ceiling for its NCAA Tournament would always remain the Sweet Sixteen after losing in that fateful round seven previous times (1976, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991).
However, on this date 20 years ago in 2004 a gritty, scrappy Crimson Tide broke through with an 80-71 victory over defending national champion Syracuse in Phoenix which sent Alabama to its first, and to this date only, Elite Eight appearance.
Due to a lackluster 17-12 record, Alabama got sent to the West Region as the No. 8 seed and edged No. 9-seed Southern Illinois, 65-64, in an opening-round game in Seattle. In the next game, the Crimson Tide shocked the world with a stunning, 70-67, upset over No. 1-seed Stanford to reach the Sweet Sixteen roadblock.
Facing fifth-seeded Syracuse, fresh off a national championship run the previous season with Carmelo Anthony, Alabama didn’t let the memories of previous Sweet Sixteen endings drive the narrative. Led by Earnest Shelton, Kennedy Winston and a powerful second half from Chuck Davis, the Crimson Tide seized control and rolled into the Elite Eight.
“It means a lot to me because I played at Alabama and we didn't get to this point,” said Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried, who played on three Sweet Sixteen teams in the 80s. “I told my team that I'm 40 years old and there is nothing I can do about it now, and you don't want to have regrets. You have an opportunity today to do it and I can't change what happened to me back then and it means a lot.”
Shelton scored a team-high 22 points, while Winston had 19. Davis scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half. Antoine Pettway added 10 points and nine assists.
Alabama made 11 of 12 free throws in the final 8:10 and finished 19 of 23 overall to keep the Orangemen at bay. In addition to shattering the Sweet Sixteen glass ceiling, it was also the first victory over Syracuse after losing in 1996 and 1997.
Former players, coaches and staff from that historic 2004 NCAA Tournament run were honored earlier this season at Coleman Coliseum during halftime of the Texas A&M game.
