How do we move 'trust' from being a rhetorical flourish into a political strategy? That's the theme of a new report I've written for the @SMFthinktank, with an introuction from the great @patmcfaddenmp

Following our first paper on trust from @steve_vr and @patmcfaddenmp, we're delighted to publish this excellent essay from @RichardBakerMP focusing on the particular challenge of trust in politics and political institutions in Scotland.

again more thoughtful reading in the current environment where hot takes are ten a penny but actual insight is as rare as a hens tooh from @steve_vr ...👇
One practical thing I would change in No10 is the mission boards. They’ve stymied agility & dynamism with bureaucracy. Set clear short, mid, & long-term metrics. Don’t micromanage the process. Measure delivery & public trust (see our recent SMF paper by @steve_vr).
🚨NEW ESSAY SERIES🚨
“The fight for trust is the battle that defines our political era” ~ PM Starmer
Writing for SMF, Dr @steve_vr agrees, and notes: “It’s easy to say trust is important, it’s much harder to identify... what we can do to increase it." https://t.co/LLdHNcB8Aq
💭 “It’s easy to say trust is important, it’s much harder to identify where trust matters most, and what we can do to increase it."
@steve_vr writes in the first report of a new @SMFthinktank series on rebuilding trust in politics:

@ProfTimBale Den Engel (the red canopies on the picture) is an Antwerp institution where you can buy a bolleke of De Koninck beer (they also have a brewery). The Red Star Line Museum. The Vleeshuis museum. De Vagant is a good gin bar. Ghent > Bruges if you fancy a trip out
I did an interview about trust on a podcast about trust… so if you like trust, have a listen?

Alistair was the man who not only gave me my career, but served the beef at my wedding and the cake at our last chat just a few weeks ago. I’ll be forever grateful to have known him, and sad not to be able to share another bottle of wine with him
I’m sadder than words can say. Alistair Darling was a great man, but never expected to be treated as one. A man who always felt the weight of the huge decisions that public service involves, but was still able to take them - even in the darkest of economic times
I agree with Anthony Seldon about the damage Boris Johnson has done and his unfitness for public office.
But there's a question he doesn't address here, which needs more attention.
It troubled me about his book, too. So let me try to explain... 🧵

My paper with @DanTGilbert is out today in Nature: people believe that people are less kind than they used to be, they're probably wrong about that, and we have an idea where this illusion comes from. https://t.co/n548VN5EiQ
