China grew its GDP by a factor of 30 between 1990 and 2015.
From under $400 billion to over $10 trillion in 25 years.
It lifted 800 million people out of extreme poverty. The fastest sustained economic expansion by a major economy in all of recorded history.
Here is what that has to do with Africa.
In 1990, China's trade as a percentage of GDP was 9.5%. Most of its economy was closed and internal. The global investor consensus was that China was too opaque, too risky, and too far from the systems that institutional capital was comfortable with.
The investors who ignored that consensus and went in early did not just make money. They participated in the defining economic transformation of the 20th century.
Africa's total consumer spending is projected to hit $2.5 trillion by 2030. Its working-age population will be the largest in the world by 2050. It holds 30% of the world's critical minerals that every clean energy transition depends on. It has produced a $1 trillion mobile money infrastructure largely without the banking system the rest of the world built over 200 years.
The African Development Bank McKinsey data showing fastest growing economies right now includes Ethiopia at 9% annual growth for 20 consecutive years, Rwanda at 7% for 20 years, and Côte d'Ivoire at 6% for over a decade.
The China of 1990 did not look like the China of 2015. It looked like a risk.
The investors who saw past the risk framing to the structural reality underneath wrote the best chapters of their careers.
The people writing the Africa chapter right now are in the early pages of the same story.
I chose to be in those pages.
It is a great day to invest in Africa.
