You can be globally compassionate as a person and still feel that your society should have careful borders and that local cultures matter, and should be preserved if they're clearly doing well.
These actually aren't in contradiction.
The Fed is about to make a dangerous mistake. It is confusing getting poorer with inflation.
When you pay more at the pump but drive away with less gas, that is not you spending freely. That is you getting squeezed.
Your dollars out the door go up. What you actually get goes down. You cut restaurants and everything else just to cover the basics.
That is not inflation. It is impoverishment. And rate hikes cannot fix it, because hiking does not produce more oil or lower a grocery bill.
One number captures it. 44.4 percent of Americans now expect unemployment to rise, the highest since early 2020.
People are not afraid prices rise forever. They are afraid their next paycheck never arrives.
The fact that people still care about 25 basis points is evidence that they don’t yet appreciate the depth of the fiscal dominance we are in.
Anyway, have a nice weekend.
Ok, let’s assume the Fed hikes 25bp. How will that impact commodity prices that are moving higher driven by supply shortages? This “may” work in a demand driven commodity bull market but not if higher prices are driven by supply problems. Oh, and will a hike stop the gvt of overspending and increase the 40trln plus debt? Nah, don’t think so
The Fed is probably blasting The Clash right about now. Should I stay or should I go. 🎶
Market's now leaning hard toward a hike next week at ~90% odds, but I'm not convinced that's the right move.
25 basis points isn't enough to move the needle on the forces actually driving inflation - energy and geopolitics - not a domestic economy that's running too hot (more like warm?).
Hiking into the wrong driver risks tightening financial conditions for no real gain on inflation. Not surprising bonds are saying no bueno! That's the trade-off I'd be watching closely, not just the decision itself.
I broke all of it down on @BloombergTV’s The Weekend this morning w/@davidgura & Christina Ruffini. And apparently I'm now in the running for their weekend DJ slot. DREAM JOB!!! 🎧 🙌🏻 😆

Another road trip move with Madison. Just the mattress left. Bittersweet as I will miss her dearly but proud of her as she starts a new job in Pittsburgh.
I still remember it like it was yesterday and I think about it often. To those of us in lower Manhattan that day and the entire downtown community, we share an unbreakable bond. To all my friends, directly or indirectly touched by the events of that day, #NeverForget
Everyone says “tax the rich” but look at the actual numbers.
Someone earning $150,000 pays around $30,600 in federal tax.
Someone earning $25,000 pays about $1,200.
It takes 25 people at that lower income to contribute what one high earner pays alone.
So why keep pushing high earners to leave when they’re already carrying most of the load?
The real problem was never how much tax gets collected.
It’s how much gets wasted once it’s in the government’s hands.
Stop blaming the rich.
Start asking where the money actually goes.
Celebrating tonight! Both kids have jobs after college!
Shae at Schaeffler in Ohio.
Madison at American Economic Association in Pittsburgh! So happy and proud of them both.
Well done darlings! 🥂
What’s really going to bake your noodle later on, is realizing that rate hikes are not nearly as effective at dealing with deficit-driven inflation as they are at dealing with lending-driven inflation.
