What made them decide to put up a giant building nearly in the middle of the 17th hole?

Especially when there is so much land available and the building was not forced to be this close.

It's certainly interesting and different, just curious if any historians know what the thinking was?

That yellow line is 230 yards long and the end of it is only about 34 yards from where OB would be.
