I'm not temperamentally a doomsday worrier but this might be a moment to revisit Michel Houellebecq's great novel The Elementary Particles, a profound reflection on the dangers of bio-technology, even if Trump believes this is all a "hoax."
I want to give a shout-out to my dear friend Johnny Lyons who is the new editor of the Dublin Review of Books. Check out my review of a new book about Isaiah Berlin -- S

I attempted to reread Seth Benardete's book on the Odyssey, "The Bow and the Lyre" It's tough going but contains some profound meditations on the role of lies and truth telling. The chapter "Odysseus's Lies" suggests that Homer was a Platonic philosopher after all. Why not?
A couple of weeks ago I attended a wonderful film noir festival at the Paris Cinema in Manhattan. The highlight of the event was (to me) a showing of Jacques Tourneur's "Out of the Past" (1947) with Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer. This is a must of American film making -- SBS
Just a reminder: Today is the official launch date of my new book "On Statesmanship." Yale Press promised me a launch party with champagne and caviar. Not. But any day you publish a book is a good day -- Steven
Was Odysseus a statesman? He captained a ship, one of the oldest metaphors for a state, he navigated through dangerous waters, he made life-and-death decisions some of which he kept secret from his crew, and he returned home to restore order to a conflict-ridden community. Yes.
As some of you know, I am huge admirer of the great French philosopher, Raymond Aron. I recently found this wonderful article on line in which Aron describes being an "engaged spectator" of the World Cup in his time. Who knew? -- Steven

On Monday I was honored to be interviewed by the great Andrew Keen on his podcast "Keen on America" where we discussed my new book "On Statesmanship" and other related topics. Feel free to catch a few minutes here if you have the time -- Steven

In my forthcoming book "On Statesmanship," I consider the dearth of true statesmen in today's world. Let me suggest a candidate: Giorgia Meloni. Her statement, "Neither I nor Italy beg" (Io e l'Italia non imploriamo mai") showed guts and pride. She spoke truth.
Dear Friends,
Check out the following article from Bowdoin College student newspaper. My friends at the Eisenhower Forum up there are doing great work!

Hello Everyone,
I haven't completely disappeared. I will be on the Lincoln Project this afternoon at noon. Check it out at Lincoln Project's Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.
I want to send a big thank you to Adam Davis at the Lisska Center for Intellectual Engagement at Denison University. The forum last night on my book on patriotism was one of the best I have experienced. Also, many thanks to the students at DU Votes for their probing questions.
Kudos to the great program in Civic Education at ASU directed by Paul Carrese. This is what liberal education should be about -- free thought, open discussion framed by an awareness of civic responsibility. May the program continue to flourish!
I would like to give a shout-out to the University of New England and its Global Humanities Center directed by the great Anouar Majid. I recently came back from giving a talk there and I can only say they are doing a great job of promoting free speech and open discussion.
Hello Friends--
Please join me for a webinar on "Patriotism and Dissent in America" sponsored by the National Constitution Center this Wednesday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!
