Congratulations Toby Young — lets hope that first victory is one of many more FSU victories to come!
I’m an FSU member and attended the brilliant 'War on Science' event you organised in London. It was one of the few spaces recently where I heard academics able to discuss difficult ideas openly.
What’s the next free-speech battle the FSU will be win out on?
BREAKING: trump is having a temper tantrum, ending ALL trade negotiations with Canada.
He's butthurt that they aired an ad of President Reagan that shows how dumb trump's tariffs are.
It's VERY effective.
Be a shame if it went viral. 🇺🇲🇨🇦
I’m pleased to say George Abaraonye has been removed as President-Elect of the Oxford Union after members voted by a two-thirds majority. Celebrating a shooting isn’t “debate”. A president should defend free speech, not cheer violence. HUZZAH!
But leading the Oxford Union is different. It’s a privilege, not a playground. Members were right to say someone who advocates violence shouldn’t lead an institution built on reasoned argument.
To be clear, I fully respect George’s right to free speech — even when I find his views anti-democratic and in bad taste. University is about learning, testing ideas, and sometimes getting things wrong.
I have resigned as the honorary secretary of the Oxford Literary Debating & Union Trust, the charity that owns the @OxfordUnion’s buildings, and dispenses its charitable responsibilities onto the Union as its delegate.
The callousness of the Union’s President-Elect has shocked me, but I also can't accept the lack of intervention on the issue.
The trust is full of the most incredible people. I hope this ultimately helps, in a tiny way, a great British institution that I care so much about.
The Enlightenment gave us the right to question everything — even ourselves. In the 1800s, the UK church tried to stop personality research, claiming only they could define the “soul.” That wasn’t about faith, it was about control. Science broke their grip. Self-knowledge is ours, not theirs. #Reason #ScienceForEveryone
@KushlevPhD My love for personality science comes from the Enlightenment spirit. In the 1800s, the church tried to block it, claiming the “soul” was theirs. Science fought back — now self-awareness belongs to us all. #ScienceForEveryone
@Rob_Briner What a clear and incisive info graphic. I have already printed it out and will put it under my pillow tonight for a 3am instant upload during my sleep! (additional irony alert attached)
