@bbcquestiontime Good question Fiona on how North Sea oil improves security. Existing licenses won’t. But the government could create new licenses with terms that force UK supply or something similar at times of stress.
Just want to thank @anthonyjoshua for being such a lovely guy and making both my and my daughter’s day today. He was completely selfless, generous with his time and with a heartwarming smile. He didnt have to but he did. Thank you.
@RachelReevesMP couple of easy tax rises that won’t impact growth (small impact but action at the margins is needed); hotel tax - everyone else has it and it doesn’t stop travel. Scrap ISAs and replace with £10k investment income allowance. Too difficult to impose an ISA cap.
@RachelReevesMP Mean time costs are soaring due to kids moving from private to State - it costs the State more to educate a child transferring than would be received through VAT if they stayed. An ethical victory? Another financial mistake.
@campbellclaret Ahem Alastair - colourful language is your modus operandi. Some would say an illustration of passion. But most would agree public facing figures should refrain.
@johnmcternan@guardian Mmm - you can see the replies about the cost of his decisions. But keep in mind too his approach to his brother and what resulted.
@campbellclaret And hopefully the US stepping away is a catalyst for the EU to reform and be more commercially minded. That would provide a real opportunity to re-join through a new referendum.
@RichardBurgon As @campbellclaret will tell you - it’s the rule of law. Energy companies leave, their capital expenditure goes and tax bills go up. Instead tax, regulate and incentivise green energy through new licenses and fracking. Extreme policy doesn’t work and typically ends in decline.
@RichardBurgon Or one could tackle the cash/black economy and the avoidance of VAT & income tax. If politicians could just get the country working efficiently, there wouldn’t be so much of this divisive narrative.
@RachelReevesMP At the expense of the economy. Closing the wealth divide is critical for society. But that takes time and long term planning. Growth needs to be in place first and to your wage point; the uk risks being structurally uncompetitive.
