Inefficiency is a savior.
Had a good catch up with an engineer friend last night. He’s just quit his job because he didn’t like it anymore.
I asked if he felt threatened by AI and overall seemed very calm.
“For 10 years I’ve been telling people about easily setting up a site on Wordpress for free. They still look confused and insist on paying me for a website.”
So many of us assume technological changes are implemented with perfect efficiency:
This assumes
- everyone knows about it
- everyone knows how to use it
- everyone can be bothered to use it
- everyone trusts it
More often than not, several of these tests fail.
Or, as he put it, “everyone’s just so lazy.”
At least for now, my guest posts are ranking better than my clients in GPT search. Seems that while Google is looking for real businesses, products and services, Search GPT is mainly looking at content.
Nothing works 100% of the time.
And when we sign a really big client there's always that fear of "what if this is one of the duds", which removes any sense of celebration.
Gurus talk about the joy of landing high ticket clients but not the stress of an unsatisfied client when you've done all you could.
With SEO we have the compounding factor of more than 6 months of waiting for results in most cases.
But in this case we finally saw this client rocket to $63K per month in traffic value after 9 months of consistent link building.
As a friend put it to me, growth isn't linear: it's exponential.
Lots of noise at the moment about only building the finest, handcrafted artisanal backlinks.
My take?
Done is better than perfect. Just check your competitors for proof.

FOMO. After two years of basically an international conference every month, I decided to cut down this year.
That included a last-minute call to cancel my usual month in Thailand at this time, watching many friends there who I only see a couple of times a year.
Muting groupchats, avoiding photos.
But I've also got the huge renewal bills for those shiny objects I acquired at the same time a year ago. Few of which have moved.
Conferences are full of inspiration and ideas, many of which can be very lucrative. But weeks of drinking, masterminding and late-night brainwaves takes its toll on focus.
There really are a million ways to make a million. But without discipline you won't get anything over the line.
So I'm staying home, avoiding inspiration, binning dead projects.
Keep the main thing the main thing, focus on profit and stay disciplined.
@SearchForRyan This is so me right now. Often looking at charts and technicals I wonder - wouldn’t I be happier as a surf instructor? Is anything I do now relevant in 10 years? It was all worth it when SEO was thriving. Still lots of opportunity, but feels less like play.
Cardiff Expo completed - always a success when the crowd tells me no one has managed to break down SEO into simple and accessible steps to implement. Love sharing my Minimum Viable Concept sites of chatgpt content on Exact Match Domains. First get traffic, then build the brand.
@Charles_SEO@mattdiggityseo@JulianGoldieSEO@kylebot1997 "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Still, I've learned in business that we're all just trying to make a living so it is far from me to try to teardown anyone else.
