Everyone’s missing the real story here.

Jensen just told you the $3 trillion AI infrastructure market had zero demand in 2016, and nobody’s talking about what that reveals.

When NVIDIA launched DGX, Jensen spent billions building supercomputers for AI training. He had no purchase orders. Not one. Every enterprise passed. Every tech giant passed. Nobody believed compute infrastructure for AI training was worth $300,000 per unit.

Elon was the only person who thought training AI at scale mattered enough to buy hardware nobody else wanted. OpenAI was a non-profit with no revenue model. They couldn’t afford the system. But Elon saw what Jensen was building and said yes anyway.

Jensen was so desperate for validation that he personally drove a supercomputer to San Francisco and hand-delivered it to a cramped room on the second floor. That’s not loyalty. That’s what it looks like when you’ve bet the company on infrastructure nobody thinks they need yet.

That single DGX system delivered to OpenAI in 2016 became the seed for the entire modern AI training market. OpenAI trained GPT on NVIDIA hardware. Every AI lab watched and copied the playbook. Now those same enterprises that passed are fighting each other to secure H100 allocations.

The real lesson has nothing to do with customer relationships. When you build infrastructure before markets exist, you need believers who can see around corners, not customers with budget approval. Jensen found one. That’s why NVIDIA won.
