With all the discussion around digital and physical media right now, I do find it interesting that the only way to play certain backwards compatible games on the Xbox Series X is to have the actual disc since it’s not sold on the digital store anymore. (When you pop the game in it downloads a digital copy from the store that isn’t available to new buyers)
Brazilian lawmaker Erika Hilton is taking a stand against Sony’s “end of discs” announcement sending the issue to Brazil’s consumer protection agency and calling for Sony to be investigated.
Hilton says people pay extra for PlayStation consoles with disc drives, so moving away from physical games raises consumer rights concerns.
She believes Sony should be investigated if the company releases games only in digital format to push more people toward digital-only consoles.
She also wants game publishers to be clearer about digital ownership, so players know exactly what they own when they buy a digital game.
French presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon has spoken out against PlayStation’s plan to stop releasing new physical games starting in January 2028.
He says video games are an important part of culture and should be protected, not treated like ordinary products.
“Video games are not mere merchandise; they are cultural assets.”
He also warned that a digital-only future could mean players lose important rights.
“Tomorrow, you will pay without ever owning anything. No loan, no resale, no guarantee of keeping what we’ve paid for.”
Sony’s decision to stop releasing new PlayStation games on discs starting in 2028 is not expected to change Nintendo’s plans because Nintendo does what they want
Industry analyst Mat Piscatella says Nintendo usually follows its own strategy instead of copying other companies.
“My gut says Nintendo does what Nintendo wants to do, and I don’t see them changing their plans based on what Sony or Microsoft do. Nintendo is going to be Nintendo, for better or worse.”
He also said Nintendo is still doing well with physical games, physical game sales have declined across the industry but Nintendo continues to sell good
PlayStation has confirmed that physical games released before January 2028 will still work after the company stops releasing new games on disc.
If you already own a physical PlayStation game or buy one that launches before the January 2028 deadline, you’ll still be able to install and play it on consoles with a disc drive.
The only change is that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will be digital-only.
Existing physical games and your current disc collection are unaffected.
Intel has officially confirmed price increases on select consumer and server processors, citing higher supply costs and sustained demand.
The most significant increases are affecting certain Xeon server CPUs, with some models now costing more than $1,000 above previous pricing.
Not every Intel processor is affected, but new stock of certain models is expected to cost more than before. Current inventory at retailers may still be available at older prices until it sells out.
Sony is limiting PS5 Disc Drive purchases to one per order on PlayStation Direct, citing “high demand.”
The Disc Drive is needed by PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro owners who want to play physical games. The updated store page now limits customers to one Disc Drive per order and notes that household limits may also apply.
Sony has given no further details on why demand is so high or how long the limit will last. The company has only attributed the restriction to “high demand.”
They are making fun of us now.
