In a 2024 report, WaterAid warned that Ghana might have to import water by 2030 under a “business-as-usual” scenario as drinking water sources shrink due to pollution, especially from galamsey.

The state water utility has repeatedly cautioned that without curbing illegal mining and pollution, Ghana risks becoming an importer of water by 2030.

Researchers from the University of Cape Coast have stated that Ghana may have to import water by 2030 because of the inability to treat highly turbid

The Water Research Institute has warned that if current pollution trends continue, there could be no treatable surface or groundwater by 2030, implying the need to import water.

The core driver is severe pollution of major rivers, such as the Pra, Ankobra, and others from galamsey, which has:

* Raised turbidity levels far beyond treatment thresholds

* Reduced GWCL’s capacity to supply clean water in some areas by up to 75%

* Increased treatment costs and made some sources effectively untreatable with current infrastructure

Why is the government not actively implementing measures to address galamsey?

You people claim you want change, but you are not willing to fight for it. If it is not at your convenience, you are not ready.

You want change, but you want someone else to make the sacrifice. You do not care about your country enough to make the sacrifices necessary to bring about that change.

This year, when we organized the protest, TV3 put out a statement that the police had sought an injunction against the protest because it happened to fall on the same day as the State of the Nation Address. Did you people show up? NO!

The people who cared, and those who were not afraid of getting “arrested,” showed up.

ME, I HAD EXAMS O! And it would have been even more convenient for me to push the protest date, but did I? NO!

Because advocating for something you genuinely believe in should not always be about convenience. Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices for the things you claim to care about.

I had exams, and I was actively going to school while doing my advocacy. I got sick multiple times, and I STILL CONTINUED.

So why can’t we make the sacrifices necessary for the betterment of our country?

You cannot constantly complain about the state of this country and demand change while expecting someone else to do all the difficult work. At some point, we have to be willing to sacrifice our time, comfort and convenience for the change we claim to want.

If we genuinely want a better Ghana, then we have to be willing to fight for it, even when it is inconvenient.
