NBC aired the infamous two hour primetime special “Devil Worship: Exposing Satan’s Underground,” hosted by Geraldo Rivera.
The controversial broadcast became a defining moment of the 1980s Satanic Panic, reaching an estimated 19 to 20 million viewers. Heavy metal, Ozzy Osbourne, Dungeons & Dragons and teenage subcultures were portrayed as potential gateways to Satanism.
The special sparked widespread fear and backlash, with critics accusing NBC of sensationalism. Years later, after investigations found no evidence of the massive underground Satanic network described by the program, Rivera apologized for his role in fueling the panic.
