The idea of a Jewish state in Palestine was, at first, strongly resisted by American and British Jews (and many others). In fact, Jews were some of the biggest opponents of Zionism. In the beginning, especially in Europe, non-Jews were more eager to have them leave than they were to go.

The reason was simple: For years, people accused Jews of being disloyal to their home nations, caring only for their own selfish interests, and not those of the land they called home. To be seen supporting Zionism, they thought, would undermine the progress they had made in convincing their neighbors that they were faithful Citizens. Always accused of disloyalty for belonging to extremist movements that did indeed undermine their home nations, many wanted to show rehabilitation in their patriotism and a desire to serve their country rather than themselves.

Edwin Montagu, the only Jewish member of the British Cabinet, wrote in his August 1917 memorandum opposing the Balfour Declaration:

"Zionism has always seemed to me to be a mischievous political creed, untenable by any patriotic citizen of the United Kingdom. If a Jewish Englishman sets his eyes on the Mount of Olives and longs for the day when he will shake British soil from his shoes and go back to agricultural pursuits in Palestine, he has always seemed to me to have acknowledged aims inconsistent with British citizenship and to have admitted that he is unfit for a share in public life in Great Britain, or to be treated as an Englishman."

He also wrote privately to the Prime Minister, "I cannot see any Jews I know tending olive trees or herding sheep." Lol. True that. A pretty antisemitic thing to say though, tbh.

American Reform Judaism made the same objection - formally and in writing - on the other side of the Atlantic in the 1885 Pittsburgh Platform. This was the FOUNDING STATEMENT of Reform Judaism in the United States:

"We [Jews] consider ourselves no longer a nation, but a religious community, and therefore expect neither a return to Palestine, nor a sacrificial worship under the sons of Aaron, nor the restoration of any laws concerning the Jewish state."

And Claude Montefiore, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association, asked in the Edinburgh Review in April 1917, "HOW CAN A MAN BELONG TO TWO NATIONS AT ONCE?" He went on to argue that Jews who tried invited the charge of divided loyalty, and it was well-deserved.

Today, their concerns seem prescient. In 2021, the Israeli Spy who sold our nuclear secrets to Israel, which in turn gave them for free to Russia, Jonathan Pollard, told the media, "The bottom line on this charge of dual loyalty is, I'm sorry, we're Jews, and if we're Jews, we will always have dual loyalty."

It sounds like they knew what they were talking about back then. It's not that a Jew can't be loyal to America, per se. It's that they have to pick one. Dual loyalty is divided loyalty. Anybody calling Israel - or any other nation - their "homeland" needs to go home, post haste. America is for Americans.

And I'll go one step further: If you call it your "Plan B," just go ahead and make it your Plan A. Real Americans don't have a Plan B. For real Americans, this is our Alamo. There is nowhere else to go. This is it. This is the last, best place. A man dies for his country because there is nowhere else; he doesn't give his life when there's a backup plan.

For real Americans, America is both our first and last resort.
