The government heavily promoted the idea that the Bill C-34 social media ban could be temporary, with the possibility of exemptions for services that meet certain standards. My post on why the timeline from officials suggests the exemption is an illusion.

That obviously was not read. Science 's top publication is cited, The Lancet. The Lancet has published landmark research from many Nobel laureates.
"...an analysis in The Lancet that estimated that USAID assistance—aimed at combatting diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and polio, reducing maternal and child deaths, and fighting malnutrition—had saved 92 million lives over two decades.
The dismantling of USAID, according to models from Boston University epidemiologist Brooke Nichols, “has already caused the deaths of six hundred thousand people, two-thirds of them children."

ZELENSKYY: War will stop if Russia decides to stop. I understand what Russians and Americans discussed in Anchorage. Putin's lying to Trump. It's a mistake to negotiate about Ukraine without Ukraine, especially for U.S. We're ready to stop the war, but won't leave our territory.
Canada's biggest attempt to regulate social media and AI services is here, complete with mandated age verification for millions, a powerful new regulator to oversee it all, and many unresolved questions. My post takes stock of Bill C-34's first week.

Supply management costs low-income households some $600 a year in excessive dairy and poultry prices.
If you think that doesn't matter but the imagined market power of grocery stores does, you are not a serious person, much less a serious government.

Applebaum: What binds Russia, China, Iran and North Korea is not religion or ideology.
China is communist, Russia nationalist, Iran theocratic. What binds them is fear of liberal language: rights, rule of law, separation of powers and independent courts. 1/
@Smileyyeg@wealthmoose The provinces are under the jurisdiction of the same Supreme Court, the same fundamental electoral system, and the same media institutions (though admittedly not the Senate). There's no reason for alleged institutional capture to dominate federal but not provincial politics.
On Wednesday, the federal government introduced Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act, with the stated goal of making the online activities of Canadians safer. The bill raises significant civil liberties concerns, including through the limitless powers it grants the government and a new digital safety regulator.

Tens of millions of Canadians will be required to age verify to use social media when the ban launches. My post on how the government plans to implement it without standards, privacy review, or an enforcement mechanism with potential exemptions years away.

@wealthmoose@Smileyyeg Except that conservatives do not seem to have a problem getting elected provincially. Maybe the loser energy and the chippy attitude that the federal Conservatives exude account for their predicament.
This must be the most bizarre and troubling comment during the entire lawful access debate. A Liberal MP says Bill C-22 “ has nothing to do with the privacy of people and their information.” Inconceivable given the committee hearings and concerns raised.

@wokeshrekTO@connor__peters As a former GPC member, the GPC's biggest problem is that the rules are always conveniently rewritten to specially accommodate E-May's leadership bids and/or insider control.
I suspect the GPC may be de-registered with Elections Canada before she ever truly surrenders power.
The government’s digital safety bill regulates social media services, AI chatbots, and potentially any other online service or application. Who is targeted? What criteria for regulation? Bill C-34 doesn't say. It leaves all of those decisions to cabinet.

@Barootes@CoryBMorgan "There's no way we can get a pipeline built if anyone is required to examine the social and environmental impacts of such a project" is not the win people seem to think it is.
The government is trying to jam lawful access through committee, Online Harms dropped today and rumour has it that privacy law reform is coming next week. Feels like "flooding the zone".

I always felt that the Phantom Menace was one of the most visually memorable Star Wars movies. This video does a good job explaining what I understood at an intuitive level.
