‘Maybe-’ He smiles, and his eyes are glossy, and she feels sick, ‘Maybe that wasn’t fate, or destiny, not like this. That was just me choosing you, and you choosing me. But this? No one else can do what I can.’
“Close.” Mom leans back again, gently placing a bouquet of pink flowers down. “Steve.”
“Steve,” she echoes.
“Steve.” Mom’s voice softens. “His name was Steve.”
Arms wrap around her. She feels hair tickling her face, and knows it’s Steve, even with her eyes shut. Even though they’ve never hugged before, and never will again.
He speaks quietly into her ear, though it sounds distant, “I’ll see you around, yeah?”
He hunched with his arms open, ready to grab her around the thighs and lift her.
“Have you ever done a cheerleadering move?”
“No? Have you?”
“…No?”
“Great, then we’re evenly matched. That’s important in sport.”
“Uh, you’re the one who said we’d do this, dude.”
“No, I said I’d do it!”
“As you go, so goes the nation.”
Steve blinked. “Are you the nation in this scenario?”
“That I am.”
Steve walks to a light switch on the wall and FLICKS IT OFF AND ON REPEATEDLY. Nothing.
ROBIN: That isn’t going to work, dingus.
STEVE: (sarcastically) Oh really?
He continues with the flicking of the switch, but more rapidly.

“Sequels are never as good as the originals. Don’t start giving them ideas, though.”
“No, that’s my escape plan. Make fun of their chairs until they’re so embarrassed they go off to build us a secret bunker and we have time to escape.”
ROBIN: Listen to me, Steve. It's shocked me to my core, but I like you. I really like you. But I'm not like your other friends. And I'm not like Nancy Wheeler.
‘Maybe-’ He smiles, and his eyes are glossy, and she feels sick, ‘Maybe that wasn’t fate, or destiny, not like this. That was just me choosing you, and you choosing me. But this? No one else can do what I can.’
Then Robin asks, “Would it be totally off-the-wall weird if I hugged you right now?”
“Absolutely batshit bizarre,” Steve replies immediately. “Completely ridiculous, stupid, worse-than-interdimensional-monsters, wild, come here.”
STEVE: Alright, uh, we can take them, it’s not that many—
An EAR-PIERCING shriek echoes out, as if in response to Steve. A MASSIVE SWARM OF DEMOBATS, headed their way across the scorched sky. Must be at least a hundred of the fuckers.
ROBIN: ... You were saying?
“Uh, you’re the one who said we’d do this, dude.”
“No, I said I’d do it!”
“As you go, so goes the nation.”
Steve blinked. “Are you the nation in this scenario?”

STEVE: Oh, shit. Oh, shit. Okay -- Uh, goin’ in. And you know what? (takes off sailor hat, throws it) Screw company policy.
ROBIN: (dead-pan) Oh, my God, you’re a whole new man.
STEVE: Right?
