Words cannot express what an emotional, full circle moment I had yesterday. I was the keynote speaker at the convocation ceremony for UGA School Of Social Work. Just 19 years ago was a graduate. It means the world to me that I was asked to deliver their graduation speech. 🥰🥰
Happy @UGA Graduation Day to our wonderful @UGASocialWork graduates!! Here BSW grad @StokesDunavan celebrates the #socialwork journey: "I am not PREPARED, but I am glad. Because what else would there be left to learn? In this huge endless ever-changing world?" @UGAglobalSW
Very much interested to research how smartphone use is linked to sense of connectedness and our ability to form interpersonal relationships. This social media security blanket is perhaps a straitjacket instead.
An increasing body of evidence suggests that the time we spend on our smartphones is interfering with our:
—sleep
—self-esteem
—relationships
—memory
—attention spans
—creativity
—productivity
—problem-solving and decision-making skills

When you read about Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, remember Tonya McDowell, a Black mom from Connecticut who spent 2012-2017 in jail for lying about her address to send her kindergartener to a better school. The whole damn system is guilty.

As #BlackHistoryMonth ends, watch this tribute to former UN official & Nobel Laureate Ralph Bunche, an "incurable optimist" who dedicated his life to achieving peace & ending oppression worldwide.
Yes! Thanks so much! I don't think we can work in only one discipline - to truly advocate for social justice, we have to work with each other and in between systems!
I think that microSW and macroSw disciplines must work together because as a social worker, you see the micro social needs and then you advocate for policy change in macro settings. #MacroSW
It's been wonderful to engage with everyone in the #MacroSW chat tonight. I'm a Tennessean at the University of Georgia School of Social Work! @UBSSW@UGASocialWork
The geography of the #MacroSW chat tonight: States heard from are CA FL IA KS MA MI NJ NY PA TX VA - any others to hear from? other countries? Nice reach with these Twitter chats!
@StokesDunavan I agree. I think the two go hand in hand. One without the other is an incomplete picture, which is why we need people bridging the game between those on the ground and those on the Hill. #MacroSW
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I really appreciate it. That's one thing that has stumped me as a SW student - I think it's a bit unfair to try to look at the profession from solely one specialized end or the other because we should work together toward empowering all folks.
Hi! Thanks for your input - I completely agree! We need to have a broader idea of social work in which both fields can collaborate and as a result, provide stronger community support.
@StokesDunavan There's a lot of #microSW issues that can be addressed on the #macrosw level and vice versa. Both lenses need to work together in order to solve all aspects of the problem.
Thank you for adding to the conversation! We talk a lot about clinical practice skills, but it truly is crucial to be involved in the community and in the larger systems as organizers and advocates.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I completely agree. It's something we discuss often in lecture - it's so important to understand the impact of both fields as social work professionals in order to work towards comprehensive and long-lasting changes!
@StokesDunavan Both practices inform each other. Micro and Macro practice aren't separate. I'm not built for micro practice however as a macro sw I understand how trauma and mental illness can devastate entire communities #MacroSW
How do you define #MacroSW? Can it really be exclusive from #MicroSW, or is it part of a system in which both disciplines work together to help individuals and communities? #UGAglobalsw
