There is no such thing as “a sick note culture.” There is a record high NHS waiting list, crippling housing costs, widespread food poverty, stagnant wages and inadequate benefit rates, a broken social care system, dire mental health services, and closed Sure Start centres.
“Every year I am struck by the kindness of Crisis’ volunteers and staff and how much thought goes into making sure guests can relax and start to recover from life on the streets." @elliegoulding - Crisis Ambassador
Thank you @crisis_uk for inviting us to your London Skylight centre and for showing us around your facilities today. The work you’re doing has never been more important, supporting some of the country’s most vulnerable this Christmas time.
🔊 Major new research from @crisis_uk reveals the inhumanity faced by people sleeping rough in England.
It comes from one of the most detailed surveys of people’s experiences while sleeping rough undertaken in England in recent years.
Mentioning false information immediately prompts people to think of it – and can subtly reinforce exactly what we are trying to rebut.
So, although it can be tempting to try to correct misinformation with mythbusting, here are our tips to try instead: 🧵
“There is a problem with a small section of society who think that people sleeping rough are an easy prey for some horrific crimes.”@crisis_uk The dangers of being street homeless. 'I was raped while sleeping under a pier in Blackpool' https://t.co/QgLoLPXTQX
"To some people, it's clear that rough sleepers are less than human, which is completely unacceptable." @matthew_downie Crisis CEO.
Brand new research by Crisis shines a light on the brutal reality that people sleeping rough face: https://t.co/9sp9AUAv70
Destroying the tents of homeless people when it is so cold outside and the closest thing they are able to call their ‘home’ is so vile and such a dehumanising thing to do.
Irrespective of what orders police have put in place, homeless people living on the streets are first and foremost PEOPLE and deserve to be treated as such.
Not told to move or risk having their tents destroyed because some can’t bare to look at them.
Punishing people for sleeping rough is inhumane and doesn't help any of us.
According to this @BBCNews report a source close to the Home Secretary @SuellaBraverman is insisting that plans to criminalise the use of tents by people sleeping rough have not been dropped. [1/10]
If these plans to replace the Vagrancy Act are true they are utterly cruel. No one in our society should be forced to sleep rough but it's a horrible reality for some of us. How is taking away tents & exposing people to even harsher conditions an answer to this?!
We are told The Govt is proposing to replace The Vagrancy Act of 1824, with laws banning the use of tents.
Please don’t do this. People will die in extreme weather.
Instead we can work on solutions? There are plenty.
Sleeping on the streets is NOT a lifestyle choice. We don’t have nearly enough affordable homes, rents are soaring and this is leaving people destitute and forced to sleep rough.
This is a consequence of poverty. And poverty in this country has been exacerbated by policy choices

First week back at @crisis_uk after mat leave - completed! If my emails have suddenly been much more professional and insightful, this is probably why...
Here's a lovely Christmas tale. When @PaulaBarkerMP visited our warehouse recently she learned we were having trouble getting snacks for our guests. She thoughtfully tweeted @GaryLineker who kindly asked @walkers_crisps. And here's the result: 150 boxes of crisps! Thank you ALL❤️
There was a familiar face volunteering today. Ambassador @elliegoulding greeted guests, helped find them find new clothing & did barista duty. A Crisis supporter since 2015, she explained: "I urge anyone who can to join me in supporting Crisis to help end homelessness for good.”
According to FOI data we've gathered, there are more than 26,000 under fives currently homeless and living in temporary accommodation. That's basically an entire city's worth of homeless infants:
