Regarding my Academy posts. I don't think it is an academy problem. Rather a problem with the system. England youth national teams are probably the best they have ever been. Having watched games at every level this season it is clear there is a huge difference between U21 football and League football. Not in terms of level, in fact in some cases the U21 players are better technically. More in terms of style. I have watched Academy graduates on loan in the lower leagues and many of them look lost and unaware of how to play a more pragmatic risk adverse style compared to the development style in the academy. Players can then lose their confidence as they are not as good at playing that style of football and end up not being selected. Ultimately this can lead to not being offered contracts to continue their professional careers. I love the Spanish and German system where they allow 2nd teams in the lower leagues that allow players to get minutes in competitive football in a style of play they have been used to playing.

Also, the agency world is full of people with no coaching experience or qualifications to guide a young player through one of the most competitive challenges any young man can choose. Players and their parents choose family members, friends etc who think they are qualified because they have watched match of the day a few times, or agents who offer non footballing benifits rather than qualified football people to advise them.

It is ridiculous, if you were going to court and needed expert legal advice, you wouldn't let your Mum, Dad, brother, sister or friend represent you because they have watched law and order. FIFA are bringing in regulations which is a start but the exam at no stage does it teach you how to analyze a players performance or pick the optimal next club for your client based on their playing style. It is basically a law exam which is very important but has nothing to do with the advice you need to give as a football agent. I believe all agents should have to take the equivalent of a coaching license as well as a legal exam.

In short, English academies are really good but players are in a system that doesn't get them ready for 1st team football being guided by agents with no football experience. Not the optimal environment for players on their football journey.
