🚨 NEW DISCOVERY 🚨
After careful analysis of Planet Labs satellite imagery, aerial imagery, and radar data, I have identified what appears to be a previously undocumented tornado within the August 24, 2023 Williamston – Webberville, Michigan EF2 tornado event.
Officially, this event was classified as a single EF2 tornado that traveled approximately 12 miles along I-96. However, analysis of multiple imagery sources suggests that the original tornado actually dissipated earlier, after turning south of I-96 and ending near Stockbridge Road.
A separate tornado then appears to have developed just north of I-96. This tornado initially moved southwest before crossing I-96, where a narrow area of crop damage can be seen distinct from the original tornado's path. Based on the resulting tree-damage patterns, the tornado then turned southeast and continued roughly along I-96 before making a distinct cusp, turning due south, and then back east. It continued for several more miles, producing consistent but relatively weak tree damage.
Based on this analysis, the official and reanalyzed data are as follows:
Official Data:
- Webberville, MI EF2 (125 mph) | 12.0 mi | 9:29-9:42 PM
Reanalyzed Data:
- Williamston, MI EF2 (125 mph) | 6.72 mi | 9:29-9:37 PM
- Webberville, MI EF1 (110 mph) | 5.62 mi | 9:35-9:42 PM
This would effectively split the currently documented 12-mile tornado into two separate tornadoes, with the second tornado previously being included as part of the original EF2 track.
One additional note: separate analysis of the tree damage associated with the Williamston tornado suggests it may be more supportive of a low-end EF3 rating rather than EF2. That's a topic for a future post, though.
As always, if you have questions, comments, or feedback on this reanalysis, feel free to reply!
@tornadotrx Out of curiosity, was this near Sullivan/Allenville? I had things get a bit hairy there. Saw what I belive was a breif tornado a little close for comfort
@NickKrasz_Wx Awesome man! Just beat that level myself a couple months ago as my first medium! 96% got me twice, so I feel that pain 😭Don't ask how many attempts it took me
@number_pizza111 Michigan doesn't have any tolls aside from the Mackinac Bridge and border connections with Canada, so we don't really have a need for it
