Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman is set to assume the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this Tuesday.
The 81st session will formally open on 8 September, while the high-level general debate will begin on 22 September with addresses by heads of state and government.
Khalilur Rahman was elected president of the 81st UNGA through a secret ballot at the UN headquarters in New York on 2 June.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the United States to simplify visa procedures for Bangladeshi tourists and businesspeople to strengthen people-to-people and business ties between the two countries.
He made the request when US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.
The President also called for increased US investment and cooperation in Bangladesh's development, particularly in the energy, information technology, infrastructure, health and high-tech sectors.
Referring to Chevron’s role in Bangladesh’s energy sector, he said greater US investment could further support the country’s development.

Govt implementing integrated plan to overcome energy crisis: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government is implementing an integrated action plan to overcome the energy crisis by increasing domestic gas production, expanding exploration and strengthening LNG infrastructure. He said 140 MMCFD of gas has already been added to the national grid through 30 completed wells, with another 85 MMCFD expected from seven ongoing wells.

The government is also planning new onshore and offshore gas exploration, seismic surveys, additional drilling rigs and floating LNG terminals to strengthen the country's long-term energy security.

The government has approved the National Pay Scale 2026 for government officers and employees.

Under the new pay structure, the existing 20 grades will be retained, with the starting basic salary for the 20th grade set at Tk20,000 and the fixed salary for the first grade at Tk156,000.

The National Pay Scale 2026, along with the Joint Services Instructions 2026 for the armed forces, aligned with the new pay structure, was approved at a cabinet meeting held at the Cabinet Division conference room in the secretariat on Monday.

In a message, he recalled the role of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in restoring democracy and promoting pluralistic politics in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and praised the sacrifices of BNP leaders and activists in the struggle for democracy. He said the party is committed to building an accountable, welfare-oriented, democratic and self-reliant Bangladesh.

$550m Laldia Container Terminal to Boost Chattogram Port Capacity

The foundation stone of the $550 million Laldia Greenfield Container Terminal will be laid today, marking a major step towards expanding Chattogram Port's capacity and enabling it to handle larger vessels directly.

The project is expected to add around 800,000 TEUs to the port's annual container-handling capacity, reduce dependence on regional transshipment hubs and strengthen Bangladesh's trade competitiveness.

Govt committed to aspirations of FFs, democratic movement victims, July martyrs: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the government is committed to realising the goals and aspirations of the Freedom Fighters (FFs), victims of enforced disappearances, killings and repressions during various democratic movements, as well as the martyrs and victims of the July uprising.

"Sometimes everything cannot be achieved quickly due to various realities, but we will continue our utmost efforts," he said after handing over job appointment letters to 10 members of families affected by enforced disappearances and killings and families of July martyrs at a ceremony at his office in Tejgaon.

The feasibility study for expanding the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway to six lanes has gained fresh momentum following the announcement of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
An initiative has been taken to enhance a crucial 23-kilometer segment of the 159-kilometer highway to six lanes, with a focus on preserving the natural environment, protecting wildlife sanctuaries, and addressing road accidents and traffic congestion.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide funding for this project, sources said.
As per information from the Roads and Highways Department, a feasibility study is currently being conducted to upgrade the highway to six lanes in the initial phase across five areas prone to heavy traffic.
These areas include the Patiya Bypass, Dohazari, Keranihat, Lohagara, and Chakaria sections.
In addition to widening the roads to ease traffic congestion in these regions, there are plans to construct overpasses where necessary. The distance from Chattogram to Cox's Bazar spans approximately 159 kilometers.
This road, classified as National Highway N-1, is narrow and features hazardous bends in several locations, which frequently lead to accidents.

Bangladesh's economy is projected to reach $677 billion by 2030, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). By this time, the country is forecast to surpass the economies of Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand in terms of nominal gross domestic product (GDP) size.

The findings were published in a report titled 'The $150 Trillion Global Economy in 2030' by the Canadian media outlet Visual Capitalist, based on IMF's World Economic Outlook projections.

Over 600 Bangladeshis in Malaysia received consular services through the embassy’s mobile outreach

Living far from the capital can make handling essential paperwork a daunting challenge for many expatriates, but a recent initiative by the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia has brought a wave of genuine relief to hundreds of workers. Instead of making the grueling five-to-six-hour journey to Kuala Lumpur, which often means losing precious work days and incurring heavy travel costs, more than six hundred Bangladeshi workers in and around Penang were able to access crucial consular services right in their own region.

Through a special two-day mobile consular camp held over the weekend, the High Commission’s dedicated team processed over five hundred passport enrollments, handled numerous passport deliveries, and issued travel permits seamlessly. For workers like Kamrul Hossain from Barishal, who was stressed over an expiring visa and unable to take time off work, the mobile team was a timely lifesaver that spared him both expense and hassle. Similarly, Monjurul Hossain from Cumilla expressed immense relief at being able to secure a travel permit locally without the fear of traveling long distances un-vetted, paving the way for a safe and worry-free return home.

By stepping outside the embassy walls and meeting citizens where they are, this thoughtful outreach highlights a deep commitment to the welfare of the diaspora. With promises to keep these mobile teams rolling out across various states, the High Commission continues to foster a supportive bridge for its workers, pairing vital administrative assistance with gentle, constructive reminders to respect local laws and maintain regular legal status abroad.

It codifies explicit timelines for licensing, clearances, and administrative approvals, backed by an operational plan to roll out a standardized 14-day business licensing framework. Additionally, it simplifies approval pathways for public-private partnerships, particularly for small- and medium-scale infrastructure projects, while granting authority to mobilize underutilized state-owned land, facilities, and equity into productive economic use. Regulatory compliance, permits, and investor support services are also consolidated into a centralized digital portal.
Beyond regulatory oversight, the authority actively assists businesses with site selection, site-readiness assessments, and operational troubleshooting, replacing fragmented administrative processes with an integrated service model focused on investor growth.

Nationwide cholera vaccination campaign begins today

A free two-dose oral cholera vaccination campaign has begun across 14 high-risk upazilas and police station areas of Bangladesh, aiming to protect more than 5.17 million people.

The first dose will be administered from 22 August to 21 September, followed by the second dose from 26 September to 25 October. Health authorities have urged eligible people to receive both doses within the scheduled period to ensure full protection.

Key information:

• Eligibility: All citizens aged one year and above
• Exception: Pregnant women are not included in the campaign
• Vaccination cost: Free
• Centre hours: Daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm

The campaign will cover 17 wards under Lalbagh, Gandaria, Kadamtali and Kamrangirchar in Dhaka South City Corporation. Selected areas under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Khilkhet and Tejgaon in Dhaka North City Corporation will also be covered.

Designated areas of Munshiganj, Kishoreganj, Narayanganj and Brahmanbaria districts are included in the campaign as well.

Cholera is caused by infection with the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. The oral vaccine helps prevent the disease and may reduce its severity if infection occurs.

Vaccination alone is not enough. Everyone should continue drinking safe water, keeping food covered and washing hands regularly.

Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, formally assuming the country’s highest constitutional office.

The newly elected President took the oath at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (August 21) at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

The oath of office was administered by Acting Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Kaiser Kamal. The ceremony was conducted by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani.
