British Gymnastics has announced a long overdue review of its Transgender Policy in the light of the EHRC Code of Practice. Of all the policies we’ve read, BG’s current policy ranks as one of the worst.

Gymnastics is a majority female sport. @BritGymnastics has 400,000 members; 84% are female and the majority (93%) are under 18. It’s a sport for girls.

In a sport that’s had more than its fair share of safeguarding scandals, you’d assume that protecting girls from harm would be the Number One priority of the national governing body.

Instead of protecting girls’ rights to fair and safe gymnastics the British Gymnastics policy that’s been in place since 2017:

❌ allows any male of any age to compete in the female category including under-12s

❌ states that officials in the sport must not ‘mark down’ competitors who wear breast binders

❌ allows males unrestricted access to female changing rooms, showers and toilet facilities

❌ states that post-pubertal males who use drugs to suppress their natural testosterone levels may compete in the female category

It goes without saying (post-Cass Report) that no child should be socially affirmed by their sport. No child should be encouraged to think they can use facilities, enter sports categories, of the opposite sex.

Breast binders should never be recommended as they restrict breathing and can cause damage to the rib cage, spine, lungs and heart.

No males should be encouraged to access female facilities, especially those where girls and women will be in a state of undress.

The current policy has been in place for nine years, and is still on the British Gymnastics website. We call for BG to listen to women and consult widely, particularly with regard to the safeguarding of children.

The vast majority of female athletes want their category protected. Fair, safe, sport is not a nice little extra, it’s the basic minimum we should expect from our sports governing bodies.

JK Rowling has made her third public offer in as many weeks to back legal cases involving women’s sex-based rights - through her JKR Women’s Fund.
