As well as being an extremely dry March, it has also been unusually sunny. Have you noticed?
We have to go back to Covid era 2020-2021 when we last had a spring month with a strong dry and sunny combination.
March 2025 will be sunniest March in 13 years in #London, 2012 currently being 2nd sunniest March on record behind 1995 with sunshine records at Heathrow since 1957.
Quite doable with a largely sunny weekend and Monday, it will be the sunniest March of 21st century. 1995 will remain #1 but 2025 will end up one of sunniest. It make a change to report on something not dull.
Final day of a rather remarkable sunny stretch. A record breaking sunny start to meteorological spring. Continuously since February 27th we have received a large percentage of available daylight, this can be a rarity even in summer. 11 unbroken days! #London
Not a drop of rain is expected in SE England this coming week a very dry start to March.
Excluding western Norway… Spain will see the most unsettled and disturbed weather in Europe with jet stream taking a sharp turn south into Iberia/N Africa. It will become incredibly wavy, this will promote colder conditions in week after.
Barring a miracle today will be seventh consecutive sunless day in London. Not unheard of in early winter but in February that is deeply unusual. Sunshine has been measured daily at Heathrow since 1957. The last time such a sunless streak occurred in February was in 1979 (46 years ago).
Notable sequences include
5 days: 1960, 1976, 1982, 1994, 2003, 2011, 2013, 2017
6 days: 1964, 1993
7 days: 1966, 1979 & 2025
8 days: 1972
13 days: 1959
February 1959 is hard to believe. Almost 2 weeks sunless in capital. A light waft from near continent, stubborn fog enhanced by coal smoke to blame. These rotten episodes were much more common in distant past.
Day 7 of permagloom 🌫️
There are some exceptions this morning notably across parts of Cornwall, Devon and western Highlands. Also actual cold weather as well -7.9C in Aviemore with clear spells.
Today marks the sixth consecutive sunless day in London not even a minute on clock. This is exceptional not even December 2010 the tied 2nd cloudiest month of all months from 1957 managed that. A seventh day, an entire week would be extremely remarkable, it is possible, this sunless streak will certainly end on Friday.
