Since 1979, the NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign has advocated for cleaner, safer and more affordable transit for New York City's 8.5 Million subway and bus riders.
🚍 NYC deserves fast, reliable buses! A bold new BRT plan calls for center-running lanes, off-board OMNY, and signal priority to transform service citywide. Let’s make it happen.

NEW: our report "BRT for the Boroughs: How the @MTA & City Hall can transform your bus ride" proposes transformational changes for New York City's two million daily bus riders. https://t.co/o1BIk96PcI
🚍 Big win for Flatbush Ave riders: NYC is adding center-running bus lanes + pedestrian islands between Livingston St & Grand Army Plaza. But the job's not done — @Strapha wants the plan expanded further south where service is still too slow. #BetterBuses
🚨 The NYS budget is late — again. And with it, critical transit investments hang in the balance.
The $55B MTA Capital Plan means faster, more reliable service, accessible stations & climate-ready infrastructure. Riders can’t wait.
📣 Fund it. Pass it. On time. #MTADayofAction
💥 100 reasons to love congestion pricing — and counting! Less traffic. Faster buses.
Cleaner air. Better transit. More foot traffic. This is what progress from Congestion Pricing looks like.

Per @MTA, here’s what’s on ice thanks to @GovKathyHochul’s pause:
🧊 $100M in new subway, @LIRR, & @MetroNorth cars
🧊 25 ADA upgrades 🛗❌
🧊 Tech upgrades, incl track intrusion detection
🧊 250+ EV buses + charging infra
🧊 New signals on the A, C, B, D, F, & M
🧊 SAS Phase 2
The MTA Board meeting is this morning and we’re here to make the message clear: @GovKathyHochul flip #congestionpricing on! The transit system is in dire need of infrastructure upgrades and there are no other good options
When the Gov said “no” to #congestionpricing she said no to electric bus infrastructure, no to signal upgrades to stop subway delays, no to elevators and an accessible transit system. We’re here today to fight for riders, less traffic, better air quality, and better mass transit
Don't give the governor an out, Mr. Speaker. She flipped, now let her flop.
The legislature will be held harmless for any project delays at #HochulsMTA
Riders need #CongestionPricingNow
Let’s be crystal clear: Congestion Pricing is the law of the land and cannot be unilaterally overturned.
So long as the legislature holds the line against Governor Hochul’s IOU, better transit and cleaner air is within reach.
Keep calling your reps. ☎️
Public transit is the lifeblood of NYC and traffic is choking our city streets. Congestion pricing is the only policy that can tackle both in an equitable and comprehensive way. The general fund, PMT, existing taxes that go into MTA are unsustainable, not enough, or regressive.
NYers from outer-borough neighborhoods & transit deserts stand to benefit the most from expanding Fair Fares eligibility to 200% of the federal poverty level.
Proud to stand with advocates to call for expanded eligibility of this program in the budget.

Today, transit advocates and local electeds stood outside the office of @GovKathyHochul demanding that #CongestionPricing move forward! Congestion pricing is the only plan that will provide long needed upgrades to antiquated transit infrastructure!
See our press release below:
We’ve already waited 15 years.
Delaying congestion pricing will derail our chance to create a modern, accessible transit system. It will deprive our city of cleaner air, safer streets and a more thriving economy.
We can’t let short-term politics derail broad long-term benefits.
In pausing congestion pricing, Gov Hochul has effectively killed the MTA Capital Plan. This is a slap in the face to our neighbors who rely on a functioning public transportation system. This decision will also cost NYers jobs and will have devastating environmental consequences.
Ridiculous and indefensible to delay a (state-mandated!!) program designed to make our city safer, our people healthier, and our public transit more expansive and accessible for everyone.
Congestion pricing is simply good governance.
BREAKING: Our Statement on Governor Hochul's Congestion Pricing Delay: We are stunned that Governor Hochul has delayed implementation just a couple weeks before its start. Her decision tells subway and bus riders they don't rank
